Port of Wilmington-Warehouse A

Project Description: To provide additional temperature controlled warehouse space (freeze through heat), the Diamond State Port Corporation decided to demolish an old inefficient warehouse and build a new one, practically quadrupling the refrigerated warehouse capacity within the same space. The proposed building was located in the middle of the Port, immediately adjacent to another 70-year-old warehouse, which was to be saved, and immediately adjacent to the Port's busy dock. The demolition and construction needed to be completed with minimal disruption to Port operations.
VanDemark & Lynch's Contribution: VanDemark & Lynch was selected to provide the planning, surveying, and civil engineering for this project. We provided topographic and building surveys, located underground storm sewer, sanitary sewer, and water lines, designed the new warehouse access ways, and other site features, and prepared technical specifications. We prepared the required construction plans in a coordinated effort which met the requirements of both the Port and the City of Wilmington, as well as the State Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control.
Noteworthy Features: The existing warehouse had sunk nearly 3 feet in many areas, and a storm sewer system, which drained a significant portion of the Port, flowed under or near the site. This storm system was significantly damaged where it passed through the dock. Our design included a completely new storm system to drain the area, including 400 feet of trench drain and two new outfalls under the dock, and employed state-of-the-art tide valves.
Continued Service: VanDemark & Lynch has provided surveying and engineering services for the Port of Wilmington for many years. Recent projects have included providing site design for the construction or reconstruction of every warehouse at the Port, replacing the crane rails for the Port's dockside cranes, repaving Hausel, Gist, and Ferry Roads, and significant sections of Volkswagen's parking areas, replacing their fire water pumps and water mains, and solving drainage problems for Georgia Pacific (LaFarge) and numerous areas around the Port.
