To provide a customer friendly entrance and improve the internal circulation of the hospital, Christiana Care Health Services decided to expand and redesign their entrance building. This project redesigned the circulation patterns from separate drop-off and parking areas to an integrated drop-off, pick-up, and parking area, meeting the needs of handicapped and impaired visitors and employees. The new area accommodates pedestrians, automobiles, shuttles, and light delivery trucks.
VanDemark & Lynch was selected to provide the planning, surveying, and civil engineering. We provided topographic and building surveys, located underground storm sewer, sanitary sewer, and water lines, designed the new access roads, parking lots, sidewalks, handicapped accessways, and other site features, and prepared cost estimates and technical specifications. We also prepared the required record and construction plans in accordance with New Castle County and State regulations.
The entrance revisions presented several opportunities for innovative site solutions, including using landscaping, layout, and placement of site improvements to gently guide people to safe and efficient pedestrian crosswalks, phasing the construction to minimize disruption and confusion, integrating site utility upgrades for cost effectiveness and minimal interruption of the functioning hospital, simplifying vehicle circulation patterns, and maximizing parking capacity while preserving open areas for patient and visitor enjoyment.
